PUT DOWN THE JUNK FOOD AND BACK AWAY SLOWLY! Ha.
We know how to get in shape physically. When we are overweight, fatigued and unhealthy we know that the cure is essentially to remove unhealthy foods and habits from our lives. We also know that we need to replace those unhealthy things for healthy ones. I am sure you know just how hard it is to keep our bodies in good shape. Unhealthy foods and drink are so readily available and are everywhere we look. The stuff that tastes the best to us, are usually those things are not very good for us. It is hard to say no, when you belly is saying yes.
If I just allowed my stomach drive my eating, everything I ingested would be fried, sweet and packed with calories. I know where that road leads and it is not worth it.
These same ideas are true in our spiritual journeys as well. Spiritually we live in a world with unhealthy enticements around every corner. They lie in wait for us to gobble them up and fatten us up on our own selfish ambition and our own pride. We are draw away from God and only want to pleasure and focus on ourselves.
Our world mixes up recipes of self fulfillment that are loaded with the ingredients of depression, suicide, personal emptiness, escapism through drugs and alcohol, obsession, consumerism, sex and violence. We have so many believers that have let these attacks from the enemy define and creep into their lives. They have found themselves on the scale and spiritually they are unhealthy.
What is the cure? Is there even a cure? Most of our world sees Christians as frail, weak and powerless. Honestly, I think most Christians see themselves this way too. How do we become more like Christ? How do we become disciples?
It is easy , model our lives after Christ. As Dallas Willard says, “We can become like Christ by doing one thing – by following the overall style of life He chose for himself.” I will do what He did, say what He said, think the things He thought. If I want to be a better basketball player, I will model myself after Micheal Jordan. If I want to be the best golfer, maybe I model my game after Phil Mickelson. If I want to be more like Christ, I should sure hope that I model my life after Christ. That is the call of a disciple. I need to practice the activities and disciplines that Christ practiced. That is what the Word of God directs us to do in order to “draw near to Him.”
What will this involve? Disciplines of : solitude, silence, prayer, fasting, sacrifice, study, worship, celebration, service, fellowship, confession and submission.
The 52 Day Challenge will be designed to help you initiate all of these disciplines in your life. It will change you! It begins October 12. May be tough losing that spiritual fat at first, but once you get going, your life will be radically changed, transformed into the image of Christ.
Will you take the challenge.
