Back in the day, when humanity began to live in small cities, they walled in those cities to protect the residents from criminals and predators. People were paid to stand watch, or guard the gate and keep people out who had less than honorable intentions.
The watchman on the wall, or tower guard, or gate-keeper were very important to the success and protection of the city. People had to be sober, trustworthy and be willing to but the people above their own desires. Falling asleep or getting bored could be catastrophic.
Sunday, we spoke briefly about how marriage is discipleship from Luke 14:25-35. We discussed a little on how the tower illustration helps us understand the importance of having a common goal in marriage. The tower is a picture of our security as a family, where we store our goods, where we are safe and where we live together. It needs to be maintained and kept, cleaned and free from inner conflict. Discipleship includes constant communication and learning. It involves interaction.
The seriousness in having security on the tower is evident in how important the contents are. It gives us a vantage point to be able to see the landscape. We can see what’s coming. Attacks come mostly from familiar enemy. But we must be prepared. One person can’t be on watch always. Shifts must be taken to prevent fatigue. Encouragement and affection are not just ideas, they are needed and used as armor.
In order to stay on the same team, to keep harmony and trust in the marriage, we both…husband and wife must do everything we can to make sure to stand guard over our marriages. Spouses need to know that they are cared for, protected, desired and free at the same time.
Don’t take this task lightly. There is an enemy that wants to destroy your marriage. There are people being used by that enemy that want what you have, and they will do whatever they can to kill it. Don’t withdraw from the world. Surround yourself with people who will stand watch with you and have your interest at heart. Spend time with folks who can be encouraged and challenged with you as like comes at you.
There’s way too much at stake here. Keep watch. Do the work.
